🏨 The 2 Bases
| Base | Dates | Area | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
四惠东 Sìhuìdōng station puts Line 1 / 八通线 on the doorstep: 13 stops direct to Universal (~25 min), 天安门东 8 stops, 王府井 7 stops · west-side days run 40–55 min — that is the trade |
| 2 · Bathhouse Reset | Nov 17–18 1 night | East 4th Ring / Tonghui River 通惠河 (曲水兰亭 四惠店 Sìhuì Diàn) | Thermal pools, massage recovery, dinner, private overnight suite 客房 — and a direct 05:15 expressway run to Daxing |
Why one city base for 10 nights: you unpack on Nov 7 and do not repack a suitcase until the bathhouse on Nov 17. Every day is a day trip from the same hotel — the Great Wall on Nov 10, Tianjin on Nov 12, Universal on Nov 16 — and you come back to the same room every night. No mountain base, no transfer day, no 134 km round trip.
Base 1 (booked & confirmed): 建国璞隐酒店 Jiànguó Púyǐn — 惠河南街1088号, 四惠东 Sìhuìdōng. The spine is Line 1 / 八通线: Universal 13 stops direct (~25 min), 天安门东 8 stops, 王府井 7 stops, and the bathhouse sits on the same street. West-side days (Summer Palace, Maliandao, 牛街) run 40–55 min by car — budget for it
🧭 Geography audit — is anything out of place?
Verdict2 bases, 1 hotel change, 11 nights. Nothing crosses the city twice, and you unpack exactly once. Every day trip leaves from the same hotel door and comes back to the same room.
Base 1 → 2Nov 17 shopping ends central, then you walk the bags 3 minutes down 惠河南街 — both bases share the street now. Still perfectly placed for the 05:15 airport run.
Nov 10 — the wallMutianyu is a day trip, not a base. 75 km NE, ~1.5 h each way, charter door-to-door. You are back at the hotel by 15:15 with the whole evening free — which is exactly why it works as a day trip and would not work as a 3-night base.
Nov 8, 9 & 15 — sunset mathsSunset is 16:52. The Summer Palace alone is 4–5 h and 10,000–14,000 steps, so 圆明园 after it means reaching the Western Mansions in the dark. The plan is 钓鱼台 ginkgo 08:00 → Summer Palace 09:45–15:00 → back to the hotel by 16:30. 圆明园 is marked optional and only works before the palace. Nov 8 is the same logic applied to food: the tea street, 牛街 and 法源寺 all sit on the same southwest-side cluster, so the whole day walks one direction and ends before dark.
Nov 13 — the tight oneForbidden City 08:30 → 景山 Jǐngshān ¥2 → NAMOC 14:30–16:00 (last entry 16:00, so it is a 90-minute visit, not a full one) → opera 19:30 at 虎坊桥 Hǔfángqiáo. The Forbidden City closes at 16:30, so the morning slot is not optional — and NAMOC has to be at 14:30 or the day breaks.
Nov 14 — market moved红桥市场 (天坛路9号) is diagonally opposite the Temple of Heaven East Gate — so it belongs on Day 8, not Day 11. Day 8 is 天坛 Tiāntán → 红桥 → 潘家园 (10-min Didi, Sat peak) → Qianmen. Day 11 becomes a deliberately relaxed final shopping day.
Nov 11 — one pass, on a WednesdaySquare BEFORE the museum, not after. The NMC sits on the square's east edge, so museum-then-square means walking the Tiananmen security cordon twice — 45–60 min each time. Reversed, you pass once: square (morning slot) → museum → out the north exit onto 东长安街 → 南池子 duck → 前门. Wednesday, not Sunday: the museum slot is easier to get, the cordon queue is half the size, and the whole day drops onto a weekday.
Nov 16 — the MondayThe theme park is the right use of a Monday. The Forbidden City, National Museum and Capital Museum are all closed on Mondays, so a museum day was impossible anyway — and Universal runs every day with 15–35 min queues instead of 90–120. Line 1/八通线 goes direct from 四惠东 Sìhuìdōng — 13 stops, ~25 min.
Huánqiú Yǐngchéng Universal 1-day ticket ¥418–748 by tier · 游船 yóuchuán boats stopped Nov 2.
One thing to knowThe flamenco at NCPA (《飞越弗拉明戈》) ran Nov 6–7 only — the day you land. It was the right answer to "a 张艺谋-style show" but the dates are before you arrive. NCPA has new shows every week in November; check chncpa.org before you fly.
📍 Base 1 — 建国璞隐酒店 · 四惠东 Sìhuìdōng (booked)
Short answerBooked: 建国璞隐酒店, 惠河南街1088号 — a 四惠东 Sìhuìdōng address on the Line 1 / 八通线 spine. Different part of town than first planned, so the day-by-day transport rows have been rebuilt around it
Why this base worksLine 1 / 八通线 goes straight to 环球度假区 (Universal Studios) — 13 stops, no change, ~25 min, from 四惠东 Sìhuìdōng. And the bathhouse (Base 2) is on the same street, 3 minutes down 惠河南街. Line 8 runs the whole imperial spine from the same station
The wall dayMutianyu is 75 km NE and needs a private charter, not a train — the charter picks you up at the hotel door, and 高碑店 sits right on the 京通快速 expressway east
Line 8 ⭐The tourist spine. From 四惠东 Sìhuìdōng reach it by Line 1 → transfers, or Didi ~30 min — it is a reference map, not a door-spine, on this base. Your entire hutong-and-park itinerary on one train
Line 1 ⭐Your door-spine now. 四惠东 station: 天安门东 8 stops (square + NMC), 王府井 7 stops, 东单 → Line 5 for 雍和宫/天坛东门, and the 八通线 through-run straight to 环球度假区 13 stops (~25 min). 北京南 for Tianjin: 西单 → Line 4, ~35 min
Distances from the baseFrom 四惠东 Sìhuìdōng: 王府井 APM + WF Central 7 stops Line 1 · 天安门东 (square + NMC) 8 stops · 中国美术馆 (NAMOC) 东单 → Line 5 · 雍和宫 Yōnghégōng + 国子监 Guózǐjiān 东单 → Line 5, ~30 min · 什刹海 Shíchàhǎi Didi 25 min · 簋街 Didi 25–50 min (Sunday peak worse) · 湾子 (马连道 tea street) Didi 35–45 min · 琉璃厂 (seal carving) Didi 20 min from 潘家园 on Day 8
The Tianjin day北京南站 is on Line 4 — from 四惠东 it is Line 1 → 西单 → Line 4, one change, ~35 min. No traffic risk on a fixed-departure train day
The airport morningYou are not sleeping at Base 1 on Nov 18 — you are at the bathhouse on the East 4th Ring, which is already on the expressway. So Base 1 does not need to serve the airport
Alt: 王府井 Wángfǔjǐng/ 金宝街Line 1 + Line 8, and the shopping is downstairs — Forbidden City 午门 Wǔmén~20 min walk · APM + WF Central 2 min · 金宝街 3 min · 隆福寺 food street 10 min. The better choice if shopping is the priority; the weaker one for Universal — moot now: your booked base is 建国璞隐 四惠东, whose Line 1/八通线 runs 13 stops direct (~25 min). For the opera, 虎坊桥 is a ~30-min Didi
Alt: 平安里 (Lines 4/6/19)The transit-max option — Line 19 is the only line to 大兴机场 Daxing Airport (05:30 first train, ¥35, 19 min) and Line 4 goes direct to 北京南站 Běijīng Nán Zhàn + 颐和园 Yíhéyuán. 牛街 Niujie, the best food street in the city, is 2 stops away. Only worth it if the hotel is genuinely there. Note: 牛街 station connects to Line 7 广安门内 by virtual transfer — from 四惠东 take the Didi (35–45 min, ¥50–70); the metro is 3 changes
My pick建国璞隐酒店 · 四惠东 Sìhuìdōng (BOOKED) — your base for all 10 nights. Universal Studios and the Peking Opera both easy, and Line 8 covers everything else. Choose 王府井 if you want the shopping downstairs; 平安里 only if the hotel is genuinely there — don't move base for a line you won't use.

Museum Mondays: Nov 9 and Nov 16 both fall on a Monday — and the Forbidden City, National Museum and Capital Museum are all closed on Mondays. So both Mondays are used for things that are open: Nov 9 is the Summer Palace (a park, not a museum) and Nov 16 is Universal Studios. The only museum that needed a working day — NAMOC — sits on Friday Nov 13, which is why that day is the tight one.

Two things are bookable RIGHT NOW, before any alarm: (1) the Nov 12 Tianjin train — 15-day pre-sale means it has been open since Oct 29, and (2) the Nov 16 Universal Studios date-locked ticket, which sells by tier. Everything else has a fixed release time. All real-name — every booking needs each traveller's passport number exactly as printed. Bring physical passports everywhere. Note: cancelling the mandatory reservation rule at a park (天坛 Tiāntán, 颐和园 Yíhéyuán, 圆明园, 雍和宫 Yōnghégōng, 八达岭 all dropped it in Aug/Oct 2026) did not cancel real-name ticketing — you still buy with your passport number, you just no longer queue for a booking slot.
🛂 Visa & Documents
VisaMalaysian passport = visa-free 30 days per entry (China–Malaysia mutual exemption, valid through 2026). 12-day trip ✓.
Passport6+ months validity + the physical copy for every ticket check, hotel check-in, train gate and Mutianyu's real-name gate.
Onward ticketKeep the KUL return e-ticket on your phone — immigration may ask.
🌡️ Weather & the heating gap
DowntownNov 7–17: highs 10–13°C · lows 0–4°C. Comfortable in direct sun, drops hard in shade or wind.
The wall (Nov 10)−2 to 4°C on the ridge, wind-chill lower. Mutianyu is at 600 m in Huairou, so it is colder than the city. The enclosed 缆车 cabin is warmer than the open chairlift, and the toboggan is the one thing you will not feel. Windproof shell + fleece + beanie + gloves
HeatingBeijing municipal central heating (暖气) switches on ~Nov 15. Nov 7–14 city indoors can be cold — check your hotel has independent heating, ask for an extra blanket. The bathhouse and the malls are warm
PackWindproof shell (the wall item) · fleece · thermal base layers · beanie + gloves + scarf · down jacket · lip balm + moisturiser (dry) · sunglasses · thermos
🍁 Autumn bonusYour dates are dead-centre of ginkgo season. 钓鱼台银杏大道 (Diaoyutai ginkgo avenue) runs Oct 15 – Nov 20 — Nov 9 is peak, and it is scheduled first thing at 08:00 when the street is empty and the light is raking. 香山红叶 (Fragrant Hills maple) runs Oct 16 – Nov 15 — Line 4 北宫门 + bus 563, 15 min from the Summer Palace, if you want a second leaf spot instead of 圆明园
💳 Money & Apps — set up BEFORE flying
AlipayLink Malaysian card (Visa/MC) · works at 95% of places incl. street vendors
WeChat PaySame setup — the booking mini-programs only work inside WeChat, so fund it too
Metro QRBeijing subway QR via Alipay/WeChat — foreigners can activate without a Chinese bank account. ¥3–9/ride.
12306Rail app for the Tianjin train — register with your passport, pay via Alipay/WeChat/foreign card
VPNInstall BEFORE arrival — Google/WhatsApp/Instagram are blocked in China and VPN sites are blocked once you land.
MapsAmap 高德地图 (has English) · Apple Maps works · Google Maps does not.
TranslateGoogle Translate with Chinese offline · WeChat's built-in translate for menus.
🎯 My take on your plan
1. One wall day, done properly, beats two rushed ones
WhyMutianyu is the wall to do. Badaling is 70 % tour buses and rebuilt brick; Mutianyu is 70 % original Ming stone, forested, 23 watchtowers, and a fraction of the crowds — and it is the closest Great Wall to the city at 75 km. One day, a private charter, the chairlift up and the toboggan down, home by 15:15 with the evening free. That is the whole wall, properly, without a mountain base.
TimingNov 10 is a Tuesday — the wall is at its emptiest on a weekday. Start the toboggan by 13:00, and if you are behind at Tower 14, turn around there. You still get the best of it.
2. Forbidden City on Nov 13 is a HALF day — plan for it
HoursLow season (Nov 1–Mar 31): open 08:30, last entry 15:30, closes 16:30. So it is a morning visit, not a full day.
Do08:30 entry → 3–4h inside → exit 神武门 Shénwǔmén→ 景山 Jingshan ¥2 for the golden-roof panorama → NAMOC 14:30–16:00 → Liyuan opera 19:30 at 虎坊桥 Hǔfángqiáo.
3. Tianjin moved to Nov 12 — book that train TODAY, not on an alarm
⚠ Window12306 sells 15 days ahead including the travel day. For Nov 12 travel, tickets went on sale Oct 29 — they are already available. There is no release moment left to catch. Book the 09:15 C-train now so you land in Tianjin at 09:48 with a whole day ahead — and lock the 19:45 or 20:15 return in the same booking, because that is the train that gets you the blue-hour Haihe lights.
Which stationPick 天津站 Tiānjīn Zhàn, not 天津西 — it is the central one, walkable to 意式风情区 and the Hai River. 二等座 ¥54.5, ~300 trains/day.
Thursday bonusYou moved Tianjin off a Monday on purpose, and it pays: the 五大道 mansion museums close Mondays, so Thursday gets the full set open — which is what makes a same-day trip worth doing.
Backup12306 候补 (waitlist) — submit and it auto-buys you a seat when one frees.
4. One hotel for 10 nights is the real win
WhyYou unpack on Nov 7 and do not repack until the bathhouse on Nov 17. Every day trip — the wall, Tianjin, Universal — leaves from the same door and comes back to the same room. No luggage, no hotel changes, no transfer day, no 134 km round trip to a mountain base.
What you give upThe Simatai night wall and the Jinshanling hike. Both are excellent, but each costs a base change or a rushed day — and Mutianyu in daylight is the better wall anyway.
5. The Mutianyu charter is the one booking that needs lead time
WhenNov 7–8 for a Nov 10 wall day — 2–3 days prior, via Trip.com / Klook 私人包车 or a hotel-arranged driver. ~¥550–650 door-to-door round trip. The driver waits; you are not on a clock.
TicketsBuy the bundle in the same breath — 门票 ¥45 + 摆渡车 Bǎidùchē¥15 (mandatory, bought separately, the park is 4 km from the car park) + 缆车/索道 Suǒdào/滑道 Huádào. Real-name, passport number. The Nov 10 date is a Tuesday, so no weekend crush
Budget alt慕巴士 直通车 from 灯市口 / 和平西桥 ¥80 each way, or the 916快 from 东直门 + a Huairou bus. Cheaper, 08:00 departure, no flexibility
6. 曲水兰亭 四惠店 is the right Base 2 — it is literally on your map
Where惠河南街1070号, Chaoyang — East 4th Ring / Tonghui River, exactly the corridor you described. ~50–60 min on the expressway to Daxing at 05:15.
Alt水裹汤泉 (your Chengdu favourite) has Beijing branches if you want the familiar format. 曲水兰亭 is the more premium one.
7. One car booking for the whole trip, not four
The only charter you needMutianyu, Nov 10. Everything else is metro, Didi or a train. The airport run on Nov 18 is a Didi 预约 — the bathhouse is on the East 4th Ring, ten minutes from the expressway.
The one to book todayThe Tianjin train (Nov 12) and the Universal Studios ticket (Nov 16) — both are already on sale and both are date-locked. The wall charter waits until Nov 7.
8. Universal Studios on Monday — the right call, and how to play it
Why MondayThe museums are closed on Mondays anyway (Forbidden City, National Museum, Capital Museum), so a museum day was impossible — and Universal is open every day with 15–35 min queues instead of 90–120. You get a full theme-park day at the price of a day you could not otherwise use.
Get there right四惠东 Sìhuìdōng → Line 1/八通线 direct to 环球度假区, 13 stops, ~25 min. Exits B/C/D, then a 7-minute walk to the CityWalk security. Be at the gate by 09:00 for a park that opens around 10:00 — that 45 minutes early is the best queue-cutting move of the trip.
优速通?Probably not. On a Monday the queues are short enough that a single-item pass (¥190 起) is the only one worth considering, and only if the app shows 变形金刚 running long. Buy the ticket only, and check the queue times on the morning.
DinnerCityWalk is free to enter and needs no park ticket — you eat after the gates close and skip the park restaurants entirely. Cheaper and quicker.
Get backLine 7 direct, last train from 环球度假区 around 22:29 — be out of the station by 22:00. Or Didi ¥120–180, but book it before you leave the park: Tongzhou is far out and surge pricing bites after 21:00.
9. Three things that are quietly the best value in Beijing
Tea马连道 is 12 minutes from your hotel on Line 7 and it is the wholesale capital of China — rock oolongs, raw pu'erh, aged pu'erh, gaiwans, 紫砂 teapots, all at source price with free tasting at the wooden tea tables. You will buy tea for WK's family here and pay a fifth of airport price.
The marketOne Panjiayuan visit, and it is the Saturday daytime one on Nov 14 — that is when every dealer is out and the outdoor blanket stalls are fully active. The Wednesday and Friday night markets (until 23:00, lit by desk lamps) are good, but two trips to the same place three days apart is not a plan, it is a habit.
The sealThe only souvenir in the trip that is genuinely made for you. A block of 寿山石 or 青田石 with your Chinese name hand-chiselled, ~¥60–150, ready in 40 minutes while you watch. It travels home in a pocket and no one else has it.
10. Swaps if something slips
Nov 9If the Summer Palace crowds you out, swap to 明十三陵 Ming Tombs (定陵 underground palace) — quieter on a Monday, 1.5 h north.
Nov 10If the weather turns hard on the wall, the 缆车 (enclosed cabin) up and straight back down is a legitimate 2-hour alternative — you still see the wall, you just do not hike it.
Nov 8It is already the light day — tea, street food, one free temple, no reservation. If the red-eye is still in your legs, do tea + 牛街 and skip 法源寺 Fǎyuán Sì. It is 450 m and free, but it is still 450 m
Nov 14If the markets are mobbed, 陶然亭公园 + 湖广会馆 (Qing guild hall acrobatics) — both quieter, both on the way back
Nov 12Tianjin optional — if the weather turns, 明十三陵 or a 什刹海 hutong day works instead. The train tickets are refundable before departure.
🍜 Where LOCALS eat — not the tourist traps
The rule for Beijing
Where to lookEat where there is no English menu and a queue of people who work there. Qianmen and Wangfujing are for tourists; the real Beijing food is in 牛街 Niujie, 鼓楼 Gulou, 平安里 and the back-alley hutongs.
The trapRestaurants with English menus, "Old Beijing Cuisine" signs, and staff hovering at the door are charging 2–3x for the same dish. Walk 200m from any tourist strip instead.
🥇 牛街 Niujie — the single best food street in Beijing
WhyHui-Muslim quarter, 1,000 years of food. Half the street is halal and the queues are local families, not tourists. Line 19, 2 stops from 平安里 — make it a dedicated trip.
Must eat聚宝源 Jùbǎoyuán — lamb copper-pot hotpot, the legend, WeChat queue at 16:00 for an 18:00 table, ¥80–120/pp · 白记年糕 Báijì Niángāo — Beijing's best 年糕, soft and sweet, buy at the window, ¥28 · 洪记小吃 Hóngjì — 羊杂汤 lamb-offal soup + 炸糕, the working-man's breakfast · 宝记豆汁店 Bǎojì Dòuzhī Diàn — the good douzhi · 宫廷香酥牛肉饼 Gōngtíng Xiāngsū Niúròubǐng — the beef pastry, best in the city.
Extra买牛肉饼 + 糖火烧 to eat on the 980 bus back. The street is Muslim — no pork, and dress modestly.
🥈 鼓楼 Gulou — the 老北京 breakfast street
WhyOne block of shops doing the same thing for 100 years, all doing it well. This is where Beijing eats breakfast.
Must eat姚记炒肝 Yáojì — "要想吃炒肝,鼓楼一拐弯" (turn the corner at Gulou for chaogan). 炒肝 + 灌肠 + 包子, eaten standing, ¥20–30 · 方砖厂69号 Fāngzhuānchǎng Liùshíjiǔ Hào — 炸酱面 in a hutong, ¥20, the noodles are mixed at the table · 门框胡同百年卤煮 Ménkuàng Hútòng Bǎinián Lǔzhǔ — 卤煮火烧, offal + tofu + bread in garlic broth, ¥35, genuinely local · 百年义利 — old-school bakery.
🥉 护国寺小吃 Hùguósì — the snack institution
WhyScatter branches all over the city, cash, no frills, zero tourists. The reference point for Beijing street snacks.
Must eat豌豆黄 (yellow pea cake) · 艾窝窝 (glutinous rice bun) · 豆面糕 · 爆肚 (if you're brave) · and the 豆汁 + 焦圈 — the fermented mung-bean drink. Eat the douzhi at the branch near Gulou, not a mall — the mall one is a diluted tourist version.
🥈 磁器口 / 前门 area — old brands, mostly local
Must eat爆肚冯 Bàodǔ Féng — 爆肚, the real blanched tripe with sesame sauce, ¥60 · 小肠陈 Xiǎocháng Chén — 卤煮, the canonical version · 便宜坊 Biànyìfāng — 焖炉 duck (600-year sealed-oven style) · 全聚德 — 挂炉 duck, the 1864 original · 南门涮肉 — copper-pot lamb near Temple of Heaven, no tourist markup.
Modern Beijing worth a splurge
Where大董 Dà Dǒng — the modern roast duck, crispy skin, plated like fine dining, ¥300+/pp · 四季民福 Sìjì Mínfú — the locals' favourite duck; Nanchang branch looks over the palace moat · 曲廊院 (东四十一条) — creative Chinese in a hidden courtyard · 局气 — fashionable Beijing dishes done well.
NoteDa Dong and Siji Minfu need WeChat waitlists — 3–4h ahead. The others walk in.
Street-level Beijing you can eat standing up
Snacks糖葫芦 candied hawthorn (¥5–10 — November is the season) · 烤红薯 roasted sweet potato (¥5) · 煎饼 (crepe) · 卤煮火烧 · 豌豆黄 · 驴打滚 · 艾窝窝 · 冰粉 (icy dessert, Chengdu-style cold jelly — they have it here too).
Take home稻香村 pastry boxes ¥40+ · 张一元 / 吴裕泰 tea · 御食园 sweets · vacuum-packed Quanjude duck.
🎭 Shows — what plays in November
Answer to "千古情 / 张艺谋-style spectacular?"
Short answerThere is no 千古情 in Beijing (that brand's flagship is Hangzhou/Sanya/Chengdu). Beijing's equivalent is live performance on a smaller stage — and in November it's genuinely world-class, because the 北京国际戏剧展演季 (Oct–Nov) imports 120 productions from 20 countries.
⚠️ The flamenco timing《飞越弗拉明戈》Flamenco (Sara Baras Ballet, Spain) at 国家大剧院 NCPA ran 19:00 on Nov 6 and Nov 7 — that is the day you land and the day before. You cannot catch it. It was the perfect answer to your question, but the dates fall before you are in the country.
What to do insteadCheck chncpa.org and the official whlyj.beijing.gov.cn weekly calendar in the last week before you fly — NCPA has new shows every week in November (opera, ballet, theatre, concerts, ¥80–300). The 戏剧展演季 season means something good is on almost every night of your trip — you just need to read the calendar, not assume a fixed show.
Your fixed shows梨园剧场 Peking Opera Nov 13 19:30 (¥150–380, Line 7 虎坊桥 Hǔfángqiáo) · 德云社 crosstalk Nov 8–16 (¥100–280) · 朝阳剧场 Cháoyáng Jùchǎng acrobatics Nov 10–16 (¥120–270) · 湖广会馆 大驾光临 acrobatics + 评书 in a 300-year-old Qing guild hall.
🤺 Acrobats — the real thing, not a tourist show
朝阳剧场 Cháoyáng Jùchǎng《国韵传奇》— 中国杂技团, the national troupe. Genuine high-wire/acrobat art, East 3rd Ring N Rd 36, 16:00–20:00 daily, ¥120–270. This is the one worth your time.
红剧场《绝技秀之蜀国英雄》— Sichuan Suining acrobatic troupe, 14:30/16:10/17:40 daily. Cheaper, more traditional.
湖广会馆 Húguǎng Huìguǎn《大驾光临》— acrobatics + 评书 in a 300-year-old Qing guild hall near Qianmen. The most atmospheric venue in the city.
🎙️ Crosstalk 相声 — the local evening default
德云社 DéyúnshèLao She's crosstalk house. 三里屯剧场 (三里屯SOHO) ¥100–280 · also 天桥剧场, 广德楼戏园, 学院路剧场. 19:30 most nights, 14:00 matinee. No English, no translation needed — the audience laughs where you laugh.
Also老舍茶馆 Lǎoshě Cháguǎn— Lao She's own teahouse, 京味相声专场 16:30, 《四季北京·茶》19:50, and the actual play 《茶馆》19:30 on Nov 6. Tourist-adjacent but the tea and the 通说 are genuine.
Immersive & large-format
首钢园Shougang Park — the 2026 戏剧展演季 immersive district: script readings, street parades, building light shows on the cooling towers. Free entry, 六工汇 food hall inside, near 鸟巢. Check the calendar for what's on your dates.
Others《北平404列车》 immersive theatre (夜莺剧场, 14:30/18:30) · 天坛南门剧场 concerts at the Temple of Heaven south gate · 北京梨园剧场 Líyuán Jùchǎng《北京梨园京剧串烧》19:30.
How to checkThe official weekly list is at whlyj.beijing.gov.cn (北京市文化和旅游局) — updated every week, every venue, every show with times. That is the source of truth, not Trip.com. Check it in the last week before you fly.
⚠️ One thing NOT to plan around
Badaling night八达岭夜长城 (the lit-up Badaling with the dance show) ran Apr 30 – Oct 6 for 2026. It is closed in November. Your Mutianyu day (Nov 10) is the right Great Wall anyway — original Ming brick, forested, a fraction of the crowds. Don't chase the Badaling night show.
只此青绿The Water Cube 千里江山图 dance-drama hit its 1,000th performance Oct 6–11 at 水立方 and its Nov run is in Guangzhou, not Beijing. Skip it — you've got flamenco instead.
🥢 Signature dishes you should try once

🏨 09:30–15:30
🏨 Bag drop + real sleep
Check-inStandard 14:00 — drop bags at the bell desk, ask nicely for early room
NapHard cap — wake at 15:30. A 5-hour nap after a red-eye costs you the whole first evening
EatHotel breakfast or a simple 面馆 noodle bowl nearby. Nothing adventurous today
16:00–19:30 · walkable from Base 1
🌆 什刹海 Shíchàhǎi + 银锭桥 + 烟袋斜街 Yāndài Xiéjiē
Why here25–30 min Didi from the hotel (~¥35) — after a red-eye, take the car. It is the best possible first evening: no planning, just a lake and lantern-lit lanes
Route万松老人塔 Wànsōng Lǎorén Tǎ → the willow-lined banks of 后海 Houhai lake → 银锭桥 Silver Ingot Bridge (sunset over the lake, ~17:05) → 烟袋斜街 craft street → the hutong lanes behind it
Walk it twiceThe lanes are the thing, not the lake. Go in, get lost for 20 minutes, come back out
Food方砖厂69号 炸酱面 ~¥20 (10 min from 鼓楼大街, Line 8) · 门框胡同百年卤煮 Ménkuàng Hútòng Bǎinián Lǔzhǔ ¥35 · local dumplings
Early nightTomorrow is deliberately light — a tea street, a food street and one free temple, nothing booked. But Monday after that is 10,000 steps at the Summer Palace, so still sleep
🍽️ Day 1 Food — light, hot, and local
Dinner方砖厂69号 炸酱面 ~¥20 — the noodles are mixed at the table, and it is the most Beijing dinner you can have for the price of a taxi ride. Or dumplings from any hutong shop
DrinkHot 豆浆 or 酸梅汤 from a street cart
SkipDuck, hotpot banquets, and alcohol. You get the proper duck on Nov 11, rested
TipEat EARLY — the 鼓楼 street stalls fill with diners by 18:30

🍵 Maliandao Tea City (马连道茶城 · Mǎliándào Cháchéng) → 🥢 Niujie Muslim Quarter (牛街 · Niújiē) → 🛕 Fayuan Temple (法源寺 · Fǎyuán Sì)
🍵 09:00–11:30 · wholesale prices
马连道茶叶一条街 — Beijing Tea Street
Getting thereDidi ¥50–70 · 35–45 min — recommended, because you are hauling tea boxes home all day. Metro fallback: Line 1 → 西单 Xīdān → Line 4 → 菜市口 → Line 7 to 湾子站 Wānzi Zhàn, ~45 min
What1,500 m of tea shops — the capital's wholesale tea district. Loose-leaf rock oolongs, raw Pu'erh, white teas, aged pu'erh
How it worksSit at the carved wooden tea tables and taste — free, no obligation. Most shops will brew for you Gongfu-style in a gaiwan
Which floorDo not buy at the ground-floor entrance shops — tourist markups. Take the escalator to the 3rd or 4th floors of 北京国际茶城 Běijīng Guójì Cháchéng: that is where the provincial brand agents and bulk wholesalers sit
BuyingTeaware at wholesale: gaiwans and purple-clay teapots (紫砂壶), plus vacuum-sealed tea packs. Sit down, drink 3–4 rounds of oolong or white tea for free, chat with the owners, then buy at source prices
EtiquetteNo high-pressure sales at the tea tables — the polite response to a good tasting is to buy a 250 g vacuum-sealed pack or a porcelain tasting cup before moving on
PracticalBring a tote. You will want to carry this back
🥢 11:45–14:30 · the pilgrimage
牛街 Niujie — the best food street in Beijing
Getting there7-min Didi east from the tea city, ~¥15, 2 km. By metro: Line 7 one stop west to 广安门内, then use the virtual transfer passage to Line 19 牛街 station — 广安门内 is the Line 7/19 interchange for 牛街 Niújiē. Do NOT go to 北京西站, it is not on Line 19
Lunch聚宝源 Jùbǎoyuán — hand-sliced lamb in a copper pot, the legend since 1937. Opens 10:30, ¥80–120/pp. If there is a line, take a number and eat the street food while you wait
Street food满记烧饼 Mǎnjì Shāobǐng — hot sesame beef flatbreads · 白记年糕 Báijì Niángāo — sweet purple rice cakes, soft and sticky, ¥28 · 洪记小吃 Hóngjì Xiǎochī 羊杂汤 (lamb-offal soup) + 炸糕 · 宫廷香酥牛肉饼 Gōngtíng Xiāngsū Niúròubǐng— the flaky beef pastry, best in the city
Also宝记豆汁店 for the douzhi dare — the classic Beijing fermented mung-bean drink. Sour, faintly funky, and older than the hutongs around it
DressThe street is Muslim — no pork, and dress modestly
🛕 14:45–16:00
法源寺 Fayuan Temple — the quiet ten minutes
Why here450 m up the same street from 聚宝源 Jùbǎoyuán. Founded 645 AD under Emperor Taizong as a memorial to his fallen soldiers, and still the seat of the Chinese Buddhist Academy — the oldest well-preserved Buddhist temple in Beijing
OpenFree · no reservation needed · Mon–Sun 09:00–16:00. The 毗卢殿 holds a rare Ming-dynasty clay arhat relief of 500 arhats, and it is the calmest ten minutes of the trip
Why this, not Prince Gong恭王府 costs ¥40, is online-only (no on-site window), and sits ~6.5 km north near Shichahai (前海西街) — metro-reachable if you ever pivot: Line 8 straight to 什刹海站, or Line 6 北海北, both a 10-min walk. 法源寺 is free, walkable (450 m up the same street), and leaves you energy for the evening. If you want the Qing mansion anyway: open 08:30–17:00, last entry 16:10 — but skip the long taxi and you are back at the hotel by 16:30
🌆 16:30–20:30 · tea rides in the trunk
Dashilar / 北京坊 evening → early dinner near Qianmen
Why not 什刹海 againYou walked it last night at sunset. Tonight you are carrying tea and pastry boxes — go north to a lake you have already seen, or drop everything at the hotel and walk out into the lantern-lit old commercial street 5 minutes from your door. No contest
Drop-off法源寺 closes 16:00 → Didi back to the hotel, ~15 min, ¥20. Tea, gaiwans and 年糕 go in the room; you head out light
The walk前门大街 → 大栅栏 Dàzhàlán → 北京坊 — lanterns on, the tram tracks glowing, Page One bookstore open late. It is the most photogenic 800 m in Beijing after dark and you are staying 400 m from it
Early dinner爆肚冯 Bàodǔ Féng at 磁器口 (1 stop on Line 7) — the real blanched tripe with sesame sauce, ¥60 — or 小肠陈 Xiǎocháng Chén 卤煮 ¥35, or 都一处烧麦 Dūyīchù Shāomài on 前门大街 (烧麦 since 1738, ¥50–70)
Then homeBack by 21:30. Not because you are tired — because the next three mornings all start early: Mon 07:30 ginkgo, Tue 06:45 wall charter, Wed 08:30 museum. Tonight is the cheap night to spend on sleep
🍽️ Day 2 Food — a wholesale-and-street-food day
Gōngtíng Xiāngsū Niúròubǐng
Carry homeTea. You are 12 minutes from the wholesale tea street — buy at the source. Gaiwans, 紫砂 teapots, and vacuum-sealed pu'erh for WK and the family
Drink酸梅汤 from a street cart to cut the lamb

9th November 2026
🍁 Diaoyutai Ginkgo (钓鱼台银杏大道 · Diàoyútái Yínxìng Dàdào) 08:00 → ⛵ Summer Palace (颐和园 · Yíhéyuán) 09:45–15:00
🍁 08:00–09:00 · peak gold, empty street
钓鱼台银杏大道 Diaoyutai Ginkgo Avenue
Why firstOct 15 – Nov 20 — Nov 9 is dead-centre of peak, and the morning is the only time the street is empty with the light raking down the canopy
Getting thereDidi ¥80–110 · 40–50 min from 四惠东 Sìhuìdōng, leaving ~07:15 — the west side is the longest haul from this base. For an 08:00 start the car still beats any metro connection
Metro altNot worth it from 四惠东 — 3 changes each way. If the Didi app dies: Line 1 to 木樨地 Mùxīdì, then a 12-min Didi to the ginkgo avenue
RouteThe avenue is a single 600 m walk under the canopy. Walk it end-to-end, then walk back through it
AfterDidi straight to 颐和园 东宫门 (¥40, 20 min) — do not re-do the metro, you want the hours inside the palace
Walking distance钓鱼台 to 颐和园 is ~20 min by Didi, 10 km. Metro would be 3 changes and 50 min — the car buys you the whole morning
⛵ 09:45–15:00
颐和园 Summer Palace — the masterpiece, give it 5 hours
Ticket¥20 gate / ¥50 联票 in low season (Nov 1–Mar 31) — take the ¥50, it includes 佛香阁 Fóxiānggé + 苏州街, which are the good bits. ¥60 is the 旺季 price, not yours
HoursLow season: park 06:30–19:00 (last entry 19:00), 园中园 interiors 08:30–17:00
⚠️ Boats游船 stopped running Nov 2, 2026 — no Kunming Lake crossing. Walk the shore and the Long Corridor instead, and budget the extra hour
RouteEnter 东宫门 East Gate — Line 4 西苑站 Xīyuàn Zhàn, exit C2, then a 10-min walk → 仁寿殿 Rénshòudiàn → out onto the lake → the 728 m Long Corridor running west along the shore → climb 万寿山 to 佛香阁 Fóxiānggé → down the north slope to 石舫 Marble Boat → lakeshore east to 十七孔桥 Shíqīkǒng Qiáo → out at 新建宫门 Xīnjiàn Gōngmén
Exit新建宫门 (New Palace Gate) at the south-east corner is where this route spits you out — Line 8 什刹海 is a short walk from there, or Didi back to the hotel, ~¥40, 20 min
No-ferry reality checkThe lake ferries stopped Nov 2 — so Marble Boat → 十七孔桥 → 新建宫门 means walking the whole southern causeway, +3.5 km on foot. At the Marble Boat, decide on tired legs: push the south loop for the Seventeen-Arch Bridge, or bail north via 北宫门 Běigōngmén (Line 4) and skip it
Loading10,000–14,000 steps and 4–5 h. This is the day you walk the most — do not add 圆明园 on top of it
Monday tipA weekday in low season with no domestic tour groups, and every museum in the city is shut anyway
⚠️ The sunset trap — read before you plan 圆明园
圆明园 Old Summer Palace — optional, and only if you do it FIRST
Why it is a trapSunset in Beijing on Nov 9 is 17:04. Twilight is gone by 17:15. Do the Summer Palace first (4–5 h) and you reach the Western Mansions in pitch darkness — the best thing there is unlit stone
Ticket¥10 gate + ¥15 西洋楼遗址 section = ¥25 total. Opens 06:00; tickets stop ~17:30 in Nov–Dec
If you want itDo 圆明园 FIRST, 08:00–09:30 — in daylight, with almost nobody there — then Line 4 two stops (圆明园 → 西苑 → 北宫门) to the Summer Palace for 10:00–15:00. That is the only ordering that works
My recommendationDrop it. You have the ginkgo at 08:00 and the Summer Palace at 09:45, and tomorrow is a 6 km wall day. Adding a third park is how you hurt yourself
Swap insteadIf you want a second park, 香山红叶 (Line 4 北宫门 + bus 563, 15 min) is the better bet than 圆明园 — higher altitude, better colour, and it is on the way
🏨 15:00–16:30
Back to the hotel — rest those legs
Walk outLeave the palace at 15:00. The Summer Palace is 10,000–14,000 steps and the Long Corridor alone is 728 m
RestBack at the hotel by 16:30. Shower, legs up, do not plan anything else — tomorrow is the Great Wall, and it starts with a 07:45 charter
What you didDiaoYuTai at 08:00 in full autumn gold, then five hours inside the Summer Palace on a weekday. That is the peak of the trip
🍽️ Day 3 Food
BreakfastDo not do 豆汁 + 焦圈 dare before the palace — you had an 07:30 start. Or 护国寺小吃 豌豆黄 + 驴打滚 on the way
LunchInside the Summer Palace: 苏州街 cafés are overpriced. Pack snacks from a convenience store and eat properly back in town
DinnerAuthentic Beijing dumplings (饺子) or homestyle braised eggplant and noodles near your base — light, after 10,000 steps
AlsoIf you want a heavier night, 铜锅涮肉 南门涮肉 天坛店 — 11:00–22:00, ~¥101/pp, one of only 9 authentic branches (save room if having duck on Nov 11)

10th November 2026
⛰ Mutianyu Great Wall (慕田峪长城 · Mùtiányù Chángchéng) — Chairlift (索道 · Suǒdào), Ridge Walk & Toboggan (滑道 · Huádào)
🎟️ Book the charter + tickets 2–3 days ahead
🚌 07:45 → Mutianyu (慕田峪 Mùtiányù) → 15:15 back
CharterPrivate charter, door-to-door, ~¥550–650 round trip. Book via Trip.com / Klook "慕田峪长城一日游" with 私人包车, or a hotel-arranged driver. Depart your hotel door 07:45, arrive the car park ~09:15. The driver waits — you are not on a clock
Budget alt慕巴士 直通车 from 灯市口 / 和平西桥 ¥80 each way, or the 916快 from 东直门 + a Huairou bus. Cheaper, but a 08:00 departure and no flexibility
Book earlyCharter: 2–3 days out (Nov 7–8). Mutianyu tickets: buy them as a bundle now — 门票+摆渡车 Bǎidùchē +缆车/索道 Suǒdào/滑道 Huádào— via the official 慕田峪长城 mini-program with both passport numbers. The Nov 10 date is a Tuesday, so no weekend crush
Tickets长城门票 ¥45 + 摆渡车 Bǎidùchē¥15 (mandatory, bought separately — the park is 4 km from the car park). 缆车 (enclosed cabin, west line, double ¥140) · 东线 open chairlift + 滑道 toboggan combo ~¥200 · 滑道 alone ¥100. Check the on-site price board, prices vary by package
⛰ 09:15–13:30 · the wall
慕田峪长城 Mutianyu Great Wall
Getting upPark the car → take the mandatory shuttle bus (¥15) up to the base → board the 东线 open chairlift (索道 Suǒdào/吊椅 Diàoyǐ) to the Tower 6 area
The routeWalk the ridge WEST from Tower 6 → Tower 14, and on to Tower 20 if you fancy it. To Tower 14 the going is gentle; from 14 → 20 the gradient kicks — 好汉坡 (the "Hero Slope"), 450+ uneven stone steps up the steepest ridge, with the 鹰飞倒仰 photo frame at the top
Tower 14 reality checkTower 14 is the natural turnaround — and no consolation prize: it is where the cable car arrives, with the iconic wide mountain panorama. Only push on to Tower 20 if your knees feel 100% — the Summer Palace was yesterday. Turn at 14 and you still get the full toboggan finale
Watch the clockStart the toboggan by 13:00. Tower 6 → 20 and back is roughly 3–3.5 h of wall walking; Tower 6 → 14 → back is a comfortable 2–2.5 h with the same toboggan finale
Toboggan gap1.5 km of stainless luge is only fun with a clear track. If a slow rider is directly ahead of you at the top dispatch gate, pause 45 seconds before pulling the lever — an uninterrupted run down the mountain is worth the wait
The toboggan滑道 Huádào— a 1.5 km alpine slide at up to 40 km/h, from Tower 6 down to the base. The fastest and most fun descent in China. Wear trousers, not a skirt; you control the speed with a brake lever
Why Mutianyu and not BadalingBadaling is 70 % tour buses and a rebuilt wall. Mutianyu is 70 % original Ming brick, forested, with 23 watchtowers, and it is 15 % the crowds. It is also the closest Great Wall to the city — 75 km, ~1.5 h
Cold−2 to 4°C on the ridge, wind-chill lower. The enclosed 缆车 cabin is warmer than the open chairlift. Windproof shell + fleece + beanie + gloves, and gloves ON for the toboggan
Also长城无人机表演 — drone light shows over the wall at dusk on some days. Ask the driver what is on for Nov 10
🥘 13:30–14:30
Countryside lunch at the village foot
Eat虹鳟鱼 grilled rainbow trout at the village at the foot of the wall — the Mutianyu specialty, whole grilled, ~¥88–120. Farm-raised, so it is a safe bet
AlsoScallion flatbreads, scrambled eggs with tomato, wild mushrooms, 玉米粥 corn porridge — all farmhouse
Cost¥40–80/pp. Cash is fine out here, cards are unreliable at the small places
VegetarianSay 素 for the mushrooms — the pork versions are everywhere
🚗 14:30–15:30
Back to the city
Depart15:30 from the car park → back at your hotel door ~16:30. The driver has waited the whole day
⚠️ No-show driver trickIf Huairou drivers decline the 75 km run into the city (suburban drivers hate central traffic), change your DiDi drop-off to Line 17 未来科学城北站 Wèilái Kēxuéchéng Běi Zhàn — right off the 京承高速 on the city's northern edge. They accept it instantly: ~45 min, ~¥110, and Line 17 runs straight down the east side to 工人体育场. 北苑站 (Line 13) works the same way
AfternoonFree. You have had a 06:30 wake, a 4-hour wall walk and a 2.5 h round trip. Rest, or walk to 什刹海 for the late-afternoon light
DinnerAuthentic Beijing dumplings (饺子) or homestyle braised eggplant and noodles near your base — nothing heavy after the ridge
TonightNothing scheduled. This is the recovery evening before Tiananmen & the National Museum tomorrow — and that booking opened Nov 4, so it is already in your pocket
🍽️ Day 4 Food — mountain fuel
BreakfastHotel breakfast before 07:00 — congee, steamed buns, boiled egg. Do not skip it, you are climbing on empty
LunchFarmhouse lunch above (¥40–80)
SnackBring thermos + chocolate for the wall — there is nothing to buy up there
DinnerBack in the city: 护国寺小吃 spread or 姚记炒肝 for a late 炒肝 + 灌肠 + 包子 at 鼓楼大街, eaten standing, ¥20–30

🎟️ BOOK NOV 4 — Square 12:00, NMC 17:00 CST
Two reservations, ONE security pass
Square firstWeChat 天安门广场预约参观 Tiān’ānmén Guǎngchǎng Yùyuē Cānguān · 12:00 CST on Wed Nov 4 · take the morning slot. Do the square FIRST, then the museum — you walk through the square security cordon exactly once
Then museumWeChat 国家博物馆 · released exactly 7 days ahead at 17:00 CST — for Nov 11 that window is Wed Nov 4. The 09:00–11:00 slot goes first, and a Wednesday slot is far easier to get than a Sunday one
Before you bookPre-save both passport numbers AND full names in each mini-program profile — then the form is two taps. Typing a passport number on a phone keyboard while a slot is being taken is how you lose it
BringPHYSICAL passports for both. No passport, no entry, no exceptions
🇨🇳 08:30–11:30
天安门广场 Tiān’ānmén Guǎngchǎng + 中国国家博物馆 National Museum of China
Why square firstNMC sits on the square's east edge. Museum-then-square means walking the security cordon twice — 45–60 min each time. On a Wednesday that is far quicker than on a Sunday, when domestic tour groups stack up
EnterUnderground passage — take Line 1 to 天安门东 (the east side, on the museum side of the square) and exit through the underground walkway straight into the square. It skips the surface queue. Do not use 天安门西 — that puts you at the far west end with the museum behind you
Museum2 million artefacts: the 3,000-year-old bronze ding cauldrons and Han-dynasty jade burial suits. Take the escalator straight down to B1 "Ancient China" the moment you are in — do not spend legs on the ground-floor modern photo halls. 2 h in the basement is the whole visit
ExitWalk out the north exit onto 东长安街 → 南池子 for your duck → the Forbidden City moat. One direction, zero backtracking
Also长城博物馆 (Great Wall Museum) on the square's west side — free, small, 30 min
🦆 12:00–13:30
四季民福 南池子店 — Peking duck with the moat view
Why hereThis is the branch worth the queue. It is the one with the moat view of the Forbidden City — and it is 10 min north of the museum exit, so it costs you no extra travel
OrderHalf duck + 鸭饼 + sugar-sauce dish. ~¥150–200/pp
QueueThe remote queue opens at 10:30 — pull a 小桌 (A-table) for 2 right at 10:30 sharp. Official mini-program: 四季民福烤鸭店 — search 四季民福 Sìjì Mínfú → 排队取号 → 南池子店. Busy days geofence the queue to 5 km — the museum is only 1.2 km south, so your phone is well inside. Alarm for 10:25
TechniqueThis is 挂炉 open-hearth: the duck hangs directly over a date-wood (枣木) flame, turned until the skin is glass-crisp. Carved tableside, eaten with 鸭饼, scallion and sweet-bean sauce — and dip the plain skin in fine sugar, which is the connoisseur move
Note烤鸭 takes ~40 min to roast, so order early and browse the moat while you wait
The comparisonYou eat duck twice this trip on purpose. 挂炉 here (open flame, crisp skin) vs 焖炉 at 便宜坊 on Nov 14 (sealed brick oven, residual heat, softer and juicier). Same bird, 600 years of argument. Do both and pick a side
14:30–21:00
前门 Qianmen + 大栅栏 Dashilar + 明城墙遗址公园 Míng Chéngqiáng Yízhǐ Gōngyuán
Afternoon明城墙遗址公园 Míng Chéngqiáng Yízhǐ Gōngyuán — a real 1419 stretch of Ming wall + the Ancient Observatory 古观象台 Gǔ Guānxiàngtái, 15 min from Qianmen, ¥10-ish, zero crowds
Beijing Fun北京坊 bookshop + rooftop terraces + the Page One bookstore
EveningDashilar lanterns and the tram tracks lit up
Food爆肚冯 Bàodǔ Féng (the real blanched tripe with sesame sauce, ¥60, at 磁器口) or 小肠陈 Xiǎocháng Chén 卤煮 (¥35). Save the duck for tonight's second technique — you get 焖炉 at 便宜坊 on Nov 14
Tea house老舍茶馆 Lǎoshě Cháguǎn right here on 前门西大街 — the 1988 landmark built on the spot where old-style Beijing big-bowl tea was served for 两分钱 a bowl. Free to walk in; the performances are ¥88–158
🍽️ Day 5 Food — the big duck day
Lunch🦆 四季民福 南池子 — moat view, half duck ~¥150–200/pp. Alarm 10:30 — the WeChat queue opens then, not before
Snack糖葫芦 candied hawthorn ¥5–10 — November is the season, and the sugar shell is perfect in the cold
Dinner老舍茶馆 Lao She Teahouse — 前门西大街正阳市场3号楼, next to Dashilar, open 10:00–22:00. The tea house is free to enter; the 演出大厅 performances cost ¥88–158 (四季北京·茶, 曲艺团京味鼓曲). It is the closest thing to a time-capsule Beijing evening, and it is a 5-min walk from where the duck leaves you
Alternative爆肚冯 Bàodǔ Féng ¥60 (the real blanched tripe with sesame sauce, at 磁器口 — 1 stop on Line 7) or 小肠陈 Xiǎocháng Chén 卤煮 ¥35
DrinkOld Beijing drinking: 燕京啤酒 on draught, and a 酸梅汤 to cut it

古文化街 Ancient Culture Street
WhatA 5A pedestrian street of Qing-dynasty style shopfronts — 泥人张 clay figurines, kite workshops, 年画 woodblock prints, teahouses with window seats over the street
TimingShops start winding down around 17:00. Doing it before the Italian Style Town — not after — is why the itinerary works
Eat here耳朵眼炸糕 fried rice cakes and 十八街麻花 twisted dough sticks — buy boxes to bring home
🇮🇹 16:00–18:00
意式风情区 Yìshì Fēngqíng Qū + 海河 Hai River + 世纪钟 Shìjì Zhōng
Italian Style TownFormer Italian concession — cafés, 梁启超故居, terraces. The best light is the last hour before the river lights come on
Hai River海河 waterfront walk · 世纪钟 Century Clock at Tianjin Station · 天津之眼 ferris wheel across the river (¥70 to ride, free to view)
Blue hourDusk falls ~17:05 and the Haihe lights come on ~17:30. Walk the promenade from 意式风情区 past 解放桥 to the 世纪钟 Shìjì Zhōng— the European facades and the lit bridges are the best free view in Tianjin, and it is 400 m from the station gate
Return19:45 or 20:15 C-train from 天津站 Tiānjīn Zhàn → 北京南 (33 min, trains every ~15 min), back at the hotel ~20:30. Do not book the 18:30 — it makes you leave the river in the dark ten minutes after the lights come on
Dinner in TianjinBefore the train. 罾蹦鲤鱼 Zēngbèng Lǐyú (crispy fried carp, eaten bone and all) or 八珍豆腐 Bāzhēn Dòufu— Tianjin home-style, not the Beijing canon. The Italian Style Town terraces are 10 min from the platform
NoteNov 12 is a Thursday in Tianjin — everything is open. The 五大道 house museums are the only Monday-closed things in the city, and you are not there on a Monday
🍽️ Day 6 Food — Tianjin specials
Breakfast煎饼果子 jiānbǐng guǒzi — the original, from a street cart near Tianjin Station. ¥8–15. This is the one thing you must not skip
Lunch狗不理 Gǒubùlǐ baozi (touristy but historic — go for the 山东路 original) or a local 面馆 in the Italian Style Town
Snacks耳朵眼炸糕 Ěrduoyǎn Zhàgāo + 十八街麻花 Shíbājiē Máhuā— buy boxes to bring home

故宫 The Forbidden City — the big one
HoursLow season Nov 1–Mar 31: open 08:30, last entry 15:30, closes 16:30. This is a morning visit — the ticket slot sets your entry time
Route午门 Wǔmén → 三大殿 (太和殿 Hall of Supreme Harmony) → 后宫 Inner Court → 御花园 Imperial Garden → exit 神武门 north
Exit protocol神武门 is the only tourist exit. Do not hail a cab on the ring road — 景山公园's gate is directly across the street, and the hill climb is the panoramic view
Add-ons珍宝馆 Treasure Gallery +¥10 and 钟表馆 Clock Gallery +¥10 — both worth it, buy with the ticket
Beat the bunchEveryone funnels straight at the central 三大殿. Go the other way: from 午门 walk the east gallery corridor toward 钟表馆 and 珍宝馆 first — you get the small imperial courtyards almost to yourself before looping back to the throne rooms
RulesPassport = ticket. Big bags stored left of Meridian Gate
Why 08:30First slot in = the courtyards are empty and the light is best on the gold roof tiles
🌄 12:30–14:00
景山公园 Jǐngshān — THE postcard view
Ticket¥2. Literally two yuan — the best value in Beijing
HoursNov–Mar: opens 06:30, last entry 19:30, closes 20:00. If you want the park empty, come at opening — but you are coming at 12:30
WhatClimb 15 min to the top pavilion for the full golden-roof Forbidden City panorama, one of China's great views
LightEarly-afternoon sun behind you = the palace glows gold. Perfect before the light drops
RetireesWanchun Pavilion terrace is where the retirees sing — men and women, mostly over 60, belts on and voices carrying across the valley. It is not a performance, it is a hobby, and it is one of the most Beijing things in the city. Card players and tai chi on the lower slopes the whole day
🖼 14:15–16:00
中国美术馆 NAMOC — National Art Museum of China
Walk15 min east from 景山东门 — along 地安门东大街 → 美术馆东街 → 五四大街 Wǔsì Dàjiē. It is a flat walk past some handsome 1930s architecture
WhatFree, world-class Chinese art — Qi Baishi, Xu Beihong, the 国画 hall. Chinese fine brushwork and the ink-painting galleries. The one big museum you have NOT done
TimingLast entry 16:00 — arrive 14:15 and you have a proper 100 minutes. If you are running late, the 国画 hall alone is worth the trip
FreeReservation required (see the booking card above)
🎭 18:00–20:30
北京梨园剧场 Líyuán Jùchǎng— Peking Opera
What19:30, ~1 hr, English subtitles, mask-changing + acrobatics. The first tea-house-style theatre in Beijing (1990)
RouteLine 7 虎坊桥站, exit C, 300 m south to 永安路 — NOT Qianmen. From your base it is 1 stop on Line 7
Seats¥150–380 — mid-price is fine, sightlines all work. Book via Trip.com or the hotel concierge 2–3 days out
Pre-showCostume photos in full opera dress ¥100+ — cheesy, extremely fun, do it once
Alt湖广会馆 大驾光临 (虎坊路3号, same corner) — acrobatics + 评书 in a 300-year-old Qing guild hall, ¥100–200, several times a day. Atmospheric and cheaper
🍽️ Day 7 Food

⏰ Temple of Heaven is a 07:00 start
天坛 Temple of Heaven — go EARLY
TimingPark gates open 06:00 · enter through the 南门 South Gate or 东门 East Gate. At 07:15 walk into the pine woods between the gates: retiree choirs, sword dancers, tai chi, ribbon spinning, and water calligraphy on the flagstones
Inner gatesScan into 祈年殿 and 回音壁 at 08:00 sharp when the historic altar complex opens — you get the Hall of Prayer with the morning light and no crowds
Ticket¥10 大门票 (park grounds only) / ¥28 联票 in low season (Nov 1–Mar 31) — take the ¥28 联票. It is the only ticket that opens 祈年殿 Qíniándiàn + 皇穹宇 Huángqióngyǔ + 回音壁 Huíyīnbì + 圜丘 Yuánqiū; without it you cannot scan into the central circular altar and the hall courtyards. 旺季 is ¥34 联票 / ¥15 大门票
Inner hours园中园 (the historic halls) opens 08:00 — so do the park life 07:00–08:00 and the halls 08:00–09:30
No reservation天坛 dropped its mandatory booking on 15 Aug 2026 — walk in and buy at the window, or pre-buy on WeChat 畅游公园 / 天坛 with your passport number (no queue). Cancelling the reservation rule did NOT cancel real-name ticketing — the 联票 still needs your passport details
Photo祈年殿 blue triple-eaved roof, shot from the east side steps, morning light from your left
MetroLine 5 天坛东门 Tiantan Dongmen — direct from 东四 / 灯市口, or Line 8 → 永定门外 for the south gate
⏰ Literally across the street from the East Gate
💎 红桥市场 Hongqiao Pearl Market
Why hereIt is directly across the road from the Temple of Heaven East Gate — 天坛路9号. You walk out of the park and you are in the market. No transit at all
WhatPearls (the speciality — freshwater and cultured, on the upper floors), jade, tea sets, silk, fans, seals, antiques. The 3rd floor is the pearl hall
BargainPearls: ask, then counter at 30–40% of asking. The floors above street level have room to talk; street level is tourist-price
Hours10:00–19:30, peaking late morning. Arrive 10:00 — that is when it opens and the good stuff is still on the upper floors
PearlsSkip floors 1–2 (electronics, apparel) and go straight to the 3rd/4th-floor pearl halls — loose freshwater Edison pearls and saltwater Akoya strands, plus jade. Street level is tourist-price; the upper floors are where the dealers work
On sitePick individual pearls from the tray bins and the in-house jewellers will drill and mount them onto 18K gold or silver studs/pendants while you wait — 15–30 min. Counter-offer 30–40% below the first quote
⏰ Saturday = full antique market
🏺 潘家园 Panjiayuan Antique Market
WhatBeijing's giant antiques flea market: jade, scrolls, beads, chairs, Mao memorabilia, dubious "Ming" everything
Weekend ruleSat/Sun = every dealer out in full. Weekdays = half-empty car park. Today is the day ✓
Getting there10-min Didi from 红桥市场 Hóngqiáo Shìchǎng (¥15–25) — both are in the 天坛 Tiāntán/南中轴 area but they are not the same place. 潘家园 is 2 km SE. Line 10 潘家园站 also works
Time boxCap 潘家园 at 90 minutes. Two markets back-to-back (pearls + antiques) is a brain-melter — if 红桥 already sold you what you wanted, treat 潘家园 as a walk-through, not a hunt
AfterSeal carving done → 15-min stroll east into Dashilar/Qianmen for dinner — no third Didi needed
BargainPoint → laugh → offer 30% → settle ~40–50%. Walk-away power works. Alipay fine
Timing11:15–13:30 — late morning to early afternoon is the peak, and it cools down after 13:30
⏰ 14:30–17:00 · the one souvenir worth hand-making
琉璃厂 Liulichang — custom stone seals
Getting thereDidi direct from 潘家园 Pānjiāyuán to 琉璃厂东街, ~20 min, ¥40 — do NOT zigzag back via Qianmen first: 潘家园 is 6 km south-east, 琉璃厂 south-west, and a Saturday-afternoon triangle across the southern rings wastes an hour. (or from Dashilar it is a 20-min walk south-west, not 10). Metro: Line 7 to 虎坊桥 and walk, or Line 2 和平门 exit C1 then 500 m south. It sits on the same southwest axis as 牛街 and 恭王府 — you will have walked this street already in spirit
WhatPreserved grey-brick shops for calligraphy, inkstones, brushes and seal stones. The seal carvers are the reason to come: pick a block of 寿山石 Shoushan or 青田石 Qingtian stone and the artisan hand-chisels your Chinese name into it
Price~¥60–150 for the stone plus the carving. Ready in about 40 minutes — go watch them work while you wait
ScriptAsk for traditional seal script — 篆书 Zhuànshū. Its ancient Qin-dynasty curved strokes suit a stone stamp far better than modern block print, and every carver defaults to it for names. Browse the carver shops along 琉璃厂东街
Stone pick青田石 carves clean, sharp edges; 寿山石 gives warmer red and honey tones. Pick by look, both carve well
WhyThis is the best cheap personalised souvenir in China and the only one you cannot buy at an airport. It travels home in a pocket and it is genuinely yours — name, hand-cut, in stone
Also browsingInkstones (硯), brushes, seal paste 印泥, letter paper and old scholar-studio pieces. Do not buy the tourist ink sets
17:30–21:00
前门 Qianmen + 北京坊 + 大栅栏 Dàzhàlán
TransferDidi 琉璃厂 Liúlíchǎng → 前门 ~¥30, 15 min
Afternoon明城墙遗址公园 (a real 1419 stretch of wall + the Ancient Observatory 古观象台 Gǔ Guānxiàngtái) — 15 min from Qianmen, ¥10-ish, zero crowds
Beijing Fun北京坊 bookshop + rooftop terraces + the Page One bookstore
EveningDashilar lanterns and the tram tracks lit up
Dinner便宜坊 前门 — 焖炉 sealed-oven duck, a 600-year technique totally different from 四季民福 Sìjì Mínfú's 挂炉. ¥120–180/pp. The duck is the reason the restaurant is 300 years old
Note便宜坊 is the 焖炉 technique, not the 挂炉 you had on Nov 11. The brick oven is preheated with sorghum stalks (秫秸), the fire is then raked out, and the duck goes in alone to cook on the residual heat of the oven walls — no open flame, so the meat comes out softer, plumper and juicier, with a more delicate skin. It is the older of the two techniques and the reason 便宜坊 is 600 years old
🍽️ Day 8 Food — market day
Breakfast豆汁 douzhi dare day: 老磁器口豆汁店 near the temple's north gate — ¥3–5, sour, weird, REQUIRED once. You have slept properly now, so do it
Lunch南门涮肉 near the Temple of Heaven — locals' copper-pot lamb without the tourist markup. Or a 炸酱面 from any of the lanes behind 红桥市场 Hóngqiáo Shìchǎng
Snack糖葫芦 candied hawthorn from a street cart outside 红桥市场 Hóngqiáo Shìchǎng— ¥5–10, and the sugar shell is perfect in the cold
DinnerQianmen: 便宜坊 焖炉 sealed-oven duck (600-year technique, totally different from 四季民福 Sìjì Mínfú's 挂炉) or 烤肉宛 1682 炙子烤肉. Then walk it off on Dashilar

🛕 Lama Temple (雍和宫 · Yōnghégōng) + Imperial Academy (国子监 · Guózǐjiān) → 🍜 Wudaoying (五道营 · Wǔdàoyíng) Lunch → 🎨 798 Art Zone (798艺术区 · Qībājiǔ Yìshùqū) → 🦐 Guijie Crayfish (簋街 · Guǐjiē)
🛕 09:30–11:30
雍和宫 Yonghe Temple + 国子监 Guózǐjiān/ 孔庙 Kǒngmiào
Lama Temple¥25 · free incense at the entrance, light it at each hall · the 18 m sandalwood Maitreya Buddha in the last hall is staggering
Next door孔庙国子监 combo ¥30 — ancient exam halls, cypress trees, a stele forest. Shaded and calm
Getting thereLine 2 or Line 5 雍和宫 station is closest to the front gate. From 四惠东 Sìhuìdōng: Line 1 to 东单 Dōngdān, change to Line 5 direct to 雍和宫 Yōnghégōng — ~30 min, one change. Line 6 does not go there
Timing noteBoth are open every day, so this is flexible — but morning light in the 孔庙 stele forest is the reason to come early
On foot五道营胡同 Wǔdàoyíng Hútòng runs along the temple's south side — craft shops, cafés, rooftop terraces. 5 min from the gate
☕ 11:30–13:00 · lunch
五道营胡同 Wǔdàoyíng Hútòng— lunch along the temple wall
Walk5 min from the temple gate — no transit needed
WhatCraft shops, small galleries, coffee, and rooftop terraces. It is the hutong-stroll Beijing without the tour groups, and it is right where you already are
Lunch豆面胡同 or 雍和宫西门 food stalls — 卤煮, 炸酱面, 烤串, 羊肉串. Or 素虎 (Suhu), the temple-district vegan Buddhist canteen — ¥40 for a dozen dishes, and the correct meal beside a Buddhist temple
TimingEat early, before the 798 rush. You have the whole afternoon ahead
🎨 13:30–16:30
798 艺术区 — Beijing's Chelsea
Getting thereDirect Didi, ~40 min, ¥90–120. 798 is out past the Northeast 4th Ring and metro does not help: Line 12 高家园 is the nearest station (a 5–10 min walk from the galleries) and Line 14 望京南 is the other option (15 min walk). Take the car — one change beats two, and you are going back the same way
WhatDecommissioned 1950s East-German factory halls turned galleries — UCCA (flagship, paid shows ¥60–120), M WOODS, dozens of free galleries, murals, sculptures, design shops
Plan2–3 h: UCCA + whatever is showing, then wander. The buildings and street art are half the point
⚠️ Leave by 16:30Most galleries close at 17:00–18:00 and many are closed Mondays. Nov 15 is a Sunday so they are open — but the last galleries shut around 17:00, and exhibit halls stop admitting 30 min before
CafésExcellent mid-gallery espresso stops
🦐 17:30–20:00
簋街 Guijie — spicy crayfish and the night out
Why here簋街 is the real Beijing night out — a 2 km street of restaurants running east from 东直门, and 胡大 is the crayfish institution people queue an hour for
Order胡大饭馆 小龙虾 (crayfish, 麻辣 or 蒜香) + 牛蛙 bullfrog + 烤串 skewers · ¥135/pp. Do not wait for arrival: trigger the 胡大 remote WeChat queue around 16:45 — from inside 798 or the cab
Getting thereDiDi is the definitive choice: ~25 min off-peak, ¥45–55 — but this is a Sunday 16:30–17:30 run: the Airport Expressway and North 3rd/2nd Ring are congested inbound, so expect 40–50 min. It drops you right in front of 胡大 on 东直门内大街 Dōngzhíménnèi Dàjiē. No direct metro links 798 to 东直门: the fallback is Line 14 望京南 → 朝阳公园 → Line 3 → 东四十条, then a 15-min walk — three moves for a 6 km ride. Take the car
AlsoTraditional Beijing 炙子烤肉 (charcoal-grilled lamb) at 烤肉季, 什刹海 branch — 10 min from 簋街 on Line 8
AltIf crayfish is not your thing: 隆福寺 food street (Line 8, 10 min from 簋街 Guǐjiē) — a restored 1920s arts complex, far less touristy than Sanlitun
🍽️ Day 9 Food — the crayfish night
Lunch五道营胡同 Wǔdàoyíng Hútòng, right outside the Lama Temple — 素虎 (Suhu) vegan Buddhist canteen ¥40, or 卤煮 and 烤串 from the street stalls
Snack烤红薯 roasted sweet potato ¥5 — the November street icon
Dinner胡大 小龙虾 + 牛蛙 ¥135/pp · WeChat queue on arrival — the queue at 18:00 is an hour
Drink燕京啤酒 on draught — the only correct pairing for 麻辣 crayfish

Price tierFour tiers — 淡季日 ¥418 / 平季日 ¥528 / 旺季日 ¥638 / 特定日 ¥748 — on a 90-day rolling price calendar. Nov 16 is a Monday, so it should land mid-tier (around ¥528), but the winter-holiday season (which usually opens mid-November) can push dates up. Check the live calendar before you pay
优速通 ExpressOptional and priced by date — 单项 ¥190 起 · 3项 ~¥420 · 5项 ~¥560 · 14项全项 ¥900–1500. On a Monday you probably do not need it — buy the ticket only, and add a single-item pass if the app shows 变形金刚 running long
Night eventsThe 冬季假日 winter-holiday season (2025: Nov 14 → Jan 4) brings Christmas theming and often longer evening hours. The park publishes its exact calendar — confirm in the app before you fly
🚇 08:15 departure

From 四惠东 SìhuìdōngLine 1 / 八通线 through-train direct to 环球度假区站 — 13 stops, no transfer, ~25 min via 高碑店 · 传媒大学 · 双桥 · 通州北苑 · 梨园. The single biggest win of the new base

WalkExits B, C or D, then a 7-minute walk to the CityWalk entrance security
Be earlyBe at the gate by 09:00. The park opens around 10:00 on a November weekday — being at the gate 45 min early is the single best queue-cutting move of the day
BackupThe 市区定制公交 shuttle links 国贸, 三里屯, 三元桥, 安贞桥, 东直门, 西直门, 草桥 and 北京站 to the resort 07:00–20:40, one seat per person. A resort loop shuttle runs 7:10–9:30 and 17:30–21:30

⚠️ Rope-drop order — turn LEFT, not right75% of the crowd sprints RIGHT to Hogwarts. Turn sharp left into 变形金刚基地 Biànxíng Jīngāng Jīdì: 1) 霸天虎过山车 Decepticoaster 09:05–09:20 — walk straight on, 0–5 min wait. 2) 火种源争夺战 Battle for the AllSpark 09:25–09:45, directly next door. 3) Jurassic sweep 09:50–11:00: 侏罗纪世界大冒险 Zhūluójì Shìjiè Dà Màoxiǎn, then 飞越侏罗纪 Jurassic Flyers gliding over the mountain and lagoon. 4) Hogwarts 11:15–12:30, when the rope-drop mob has drained to ~20 min
Flyers virtual queue飞越侏罗纪 can run a free 预约等候卡 virtual-queue slot through the official Universal Beijing mini-program on peak days. An off-peak Monday is usually plain standby, but check the app the moment you walk in
Single Rider 单人通道霸天虎过山车 and 哈利·波特与禁忌之旅 both run single-rider lines. Happy to sit in adjacent rows instead of side-by-side? A 30-min queue collapses to under 5 — you can lap the Decepticoaster three times before the morning crowd finishes parking
Lockers霸天虎过山车 makes you stow everything. Free biometric lockers sit outside the queue — phone, coins and loose glasses go in before you line up
Harry Potter哈利·波特的魔法世界 Hālì Bōtè de Mófǎ Shìjiè— Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey and 环球魔速摩托车. Ride it after 11:00 and walk the queue slowly: Dumbledore's office, the portrait hall and the Defence Against the Dark Arts classroom are all part of it
ButterbeerOrder it frozen from the hogshead barrels inside Hogsmeade — the warm/cold tap version goes flat fast
Transformers变形金刚基地 Biànxíng Jīngāng Jīdì— 霸天虎过山车 Decepticoaster is the one people queue for, and the 3D ride underneath it is excellent
Jurassic World侏罗纪世界努布拉岛 Zhūluójì Shìjiè Nǔbùlā Dǎo— 侏罗纪世界大冒险 Zhūluójì Shìjiè Dà Màoxiǎn Jurassic World Adventure and 侏罗纪飞行 Jurassic Flyers. The big one is a boat ride with animatronics that is genuinely good
Kung Fu Panda功夫熊猫盖世之地 Gōngfu Xióngmāo Gàishì zhī Dì— completely indoors and fully heated, which makes it the 13:00–15:00 slot on a cold November afternoon. Ride Journey of the Dragon Warrior (the flume) and grab something warm
Untrainable Dragon驯龙高手:不可驯服 Xùnlóng Gāoshǒu: Bùkě Xùnfú at the 环球辉煌剧院 Universal Majestic Theatre — full-scale flying Toothless animatronic, Astrid, live stage acrobatics. Check showtimes in the official app on entry and be in your seat 20 min before curtain
Monday perkWait times hover at 15–35 minutes vs 90–120 on weekends. That is the whole reason this day works — you can actually ride everything twice
StrategyDo the four headliners in the first two hours (Forbidden Journey, Decepticoaster, Jurassic Adventure, the Dragon show), then eat, then loop the rest
Winter note未来水世界 WaterWorld closes seasonally (from early December in recent years) and the 花车巡游 parade was suspended Aug 31 – Nov 6 — check the app for what is running on Nov 16
Closed Mondays? No — Universal Beijing is open every day. The Monday closures in Beijing are the museums (Forbidden City, National Museum, Capital Museum), which is exactly why a theme park is the right use of a Monday
🌃 19:00
环球城市大道 CityWalk dinner, then straight home
CityWalkFree to enter and does not need a park ticket — you can eat here after the gates close. Restaurants stay open well past the park shut time
Getting backLine 1/八通线 direct back to 四惠东 Sìhuìdōng, ~25 min. Last train from 环球度假区 is around 22:50 — check the app on the day, and be on the platform by 22:15
AlternativeThe 市区定制公交 back to 国贸 / 东直门, 07:00–20:40, one seat per person — cheapest if it is still running when you leave
TaxiDidi back to the hotel ¥120–180, 50–70 min after a full park day. Book it before you leave the park — Tongzhou is a long way out and surge pricing bites after 21:00
🍽️ Day 10 Food — theme park
BreakfastHotel breakfast, or buy 煎饼果子 from a cart near your base. Do not eat a heavy breakfast
Inside the park三把扫帚扒猪扒包 (Three Broomsticks, the Harry Potter version of the pork burger) · 功夫面馆 (Kung Fu Panda noodles) · 落霞餐厅 (Chinese) · 面面俱到 (noodle bar). Book a table in the app if you want a sit-down
SnackHogsmeade butterbeer · the El Potato Head hot dog · Painted Apple candy from the Diagon Alley window
