Base 1 pick: 鼓楼大街 / 宝钞胡同 — the whole Shichahai–Drum Tower–hutong cluster is on foot (什刹海, 烟袋斜街, 银锭桥, 姚记炒肝, 方砖厂69号), and Line 2 + Line 8 connect you everywhere. Sanlitun/Dongzhimen only wins if you want a modern hotel + 798/Line 15 convenience, and it is worse for the airport run.
🧭 Geography audit — is anything out of place?
VerdictYour 4-base structure is sound — I checked every day's geography against the base you're sleeping in that night. Nothing crosses the city twice. 4 bases, 4 hotel changes in 12 days, and each one is a one-way move, never a return trip.
Base 1 → 2Nov 9 ends in the far NW (颐和园/圆明园) → Nov 10 heads NE to Gubei (密云). Opposite directions, but they're different nights — you sleep in Base 1 on the 9th and Base 2 on the 10th, so nothing is backtracked. The only cost is one long transfer day (Nov 10), which is unavoidable: Gubei is 134 km out.
Base 2 → 3Nov 11 hike ends at Gubei → Nov 12 you drive back to the city centre and stay 5 nights. Clean one-way move, no backtrack.
Base 3 daysAll 5 central days are within a 5 km radius of each other (Forbidden City, Temple of Heaven, Panjiayuan, Hongqiao, Lama Temple, Wangfujing) — except Nov 15 which goes NE to 798, and Nov 16 which goes S to the train. Both are one-way day trips, never a return.
Base 3 → 4Nov 17 shopping ends central, then you move SE to the Tonghui River bathhouse. One-way, and it puts you on the expressway for the 05:15 airport run. Correct as written.
Nov 8 — the big oneSquare BEFORE the museum, not after. The NMC sits on the square's east edge, so museum-then-square means walking the Tiananmen security cordon twice — and on a Sunday that is 45–60 min each time. Reversed, you pass once: square (morning slot) → museum → out the north exit onto 东长安街 → 南池子 duck → Forbidden City moat. One direction, one pass, zero backtrack.
Nov 9 — sunset mathsSunset is 17:04. The Summer Palace alone is 4–5 h and 10,000–14,000 steps, so 圆明园 after it means reaching the Western Mansions in the dark. The plan is now 钓鱼台 ginkgo 08:00 → Summer Palace 09:45–15:00. 圆明园 is marked optional and only works before the palace, not after.
Nov 13 — trimmedDropped the 什刹海 repeat (you already walked 银锭桥 and 烟袋斜街 on Day 1). Now: Forbidden City → 景山 ¥2 → cross west into 北海 for the White Dagoba (¥5 淡季) → taxi to 虎坊路 for early dinner → Liyuan opera 19:30.
Nov 14 — market moved红桥市场 (天坛路9号) is diagonally opposite the Temple of Heaven East Gate — so it belongs on Day 8, not Day 11. Day 8 is now 天坛 → 红桥 → 潘家园 (10-min Didi, Sat peak) → Qianmen. Day 11 becomes a deliberately relaxed final shopping day.
Prices corrected天坛 联票 low season is ¥20 (¥28–34 is 旺季) · 北海 ¥5 in low season, not ¥10 · 颐和园 联票 ¥50 · 故宫 ¥40 · 游船 stopped Nov 2.
One thing to knowThe flamenco at NCPA (《飞越弗拉明戈》) ran Nov 6–7 only — the day you land. It was the right answer to "a 张艺谋-style show" but the dates are before you arrive. NCPA has new shows every week in November; check chncpa.org before you fly.
📍 Base 3 — is Wangfujing right? (your question)
Short answerWangfujing is good — and it is on Line 1 AND Line 8, which is the answer. Beijing traffic is genuinely bad, so pick the base by which line you live on.
Why Wangfujing worksLine 8 is the tourist spine and 王府井 is on it: 北土城 → 奥林匹克公园 → 鼓楼大街 → 什刹海 → 南锣鼓巷 → 中国美术馆 → 金鱼胡同 → 王府井 → 前门 → 天桥. Your entire hutong-and-park itinerary on one train, zero transfers. Line 1 adds 天安门东 (square + National Museum) and 四惠 (the bathhouse)

The Tianjin day北京南站 is on Line 4 — from 王府井 it is Line 1 → 西单 → Line 4, one change, ~35 min. No traffic risk on a fixed-departure train day
The airport morningYou are not sleeping at Base 3 on Nov 18 — you are at the bathhouse on the East 4th Ring, which is already on the expressway. So Base 3 does not need to serve the airport. That was the argument for 平安里; it does not apply
Alt: 平安里 (Lines 4/6/19)The transit-max option — Line 19 is the only line to Daxing Airport (05:30 first train, ¥35, 19 min) and Line 4 goes direct to 北京南站 + 颐和园. 牛街 Niujie, the best food street in the city, is 2 stops away. Only worth it if your Base 3 hotel is genuinely there

My pick王府井 / 金宝街 — Line 1 + Line 8 covers everything, you walk to the Forbidden City, the shopping is downstairs, and the airport morning is already solved by the bathhouse. Choose 平安里 only if the hotel is genuinely there — don't move base for a line you won't use.

🎯 My take on your plan
1. Two wall days is exactly right
WhySimatai night (Nov 10) + Jinshanling morning (Nov 11) covers the two experiences people cross the country for. Don't add Mutianyu or Badaling — you'd be doing three of the same thing.
2. Forbidden City on Nov 13 is a HALF day — plan for it
HoursLow season (Nov 1–Mar 31): open 08:30, last entry 15:30, closes 16:30. So it's a morning visit, not a full day.
Do08:30 entry → 3–4h inside → exit 神武门 → 景山 Jingshan ¥2 for the golden-roof panorama → lunch → light afternoon (Beihai / hutong) → Liyuan opera 19:30.
3. Tianjin booking window — the date is right, the alarm time was not
Window12306 sells 15 days ahead including the travel day. For Nov 16 travel → book Nov 2. (16 Nov minus 14 days = 2 Nov.)
⏰ Alarm北京南站 releases at 12:45, not a flat 12:30 — every station has its own release time. Set the alarm for 12:40 Beijing time on Nov 2.
Backup12306 候补 (waitlist) — submit the second sales open and it auto-buys you a seat when one frees. 京沪高铁 also runs a 60-day 预约购票 request that auto-fulfils 20–16 days out.
4. Gubei in-gate hotel is the right call — and good value
Math水镇大酒店 from ¥910 / 古北之光 from ¥1,150 include 2 water-town tickets + 2-person hot spring + free shuttle. That's ~¥300 of tickets bundled in. Ask for a 长城景观 room with a wall view.
5. Book the Simatai night ticket the moment you book the hotel
WhyCapacity-limited and it's the single best thing in Base 2. Nov–Apr weekday hours: 17:30–20:10 (clear-out 20:40). Nov 10 = Tuesday, so the shorter weekday window applies.
6. 曲水兰亭 四惠店 is the right Base 4 — it's literally on your map
Where惠河南街1070号, Chaoyang — East 4th Ring / Tonghui River, exactly the corridor you described. ~50–60 min on the expressway to Daxing at 05:15.
Alt水裹汤泉 (your Chengdu favourite) has Beijing branches if you want the familiar format. 曲水兰亭 is the more premium one.
7. Private driver for the Gubei block — one package, not three bookings
HowBook one charter for the whole Nov 10–12 block (downtown→Gubei, Gubei↔Jinshanling, Gubei→Wangfujing). Klook 私人包车 or a hotel-arranged driver: roughly ¥1,200–1,600 total for the 3 days with a wait on the 11th.
Budget alt望京西 shuttle ¥48/pax departs 09:00 & 13:00 (134km, 2h) for the transfer legs, Didi for the Jinshanling hop (~¥120–180 each way).
8. Swaps if something slips
Nov 9If the Summer Palace crowds you out, swap to 明十三陵 Ming Tombs (定陵 underground palace) — open Mondays, 1.5h north.

🍜 Where LOCALS eat — not the tourist traps
The rule for Beijing
Where to lookEat where there is no English menu and a queue of people who work there. Qianmen and Wangfujing are for tourists; the real Beijing food is in 牛街 Niujie, 鼓楼 Gulou, 平安里 and the back-alley hutongs.
The trapRestaurants with English menus, "Old Beijing Cuisine" signs, and staff hovering at the door are charging 2–3x for the same dish. Walk 200m from any tourist strip instead.
🥇 牛街 Niujie — the single best food street in Beijing
WhyHui-Muslim quarter, 1,000 years of food. Half the street is halal and the queues are local families, not tourists. Line 19, 2 stops from 平安里 — make it a dedicated trip.
Must eat聚宝源 Jùbǎoyuán — lamb copper-pot hotpot, the legend, WeChat queue at 16:00 for an 18:00 table, ¥80–120/pp · 白记年糕 Báijì Niángāo — Beijing's best 年糕, soft and sweet, buy at the window, ¥28 · 洪记小吃 Hóngjì — 羊杂汤 lamb-offal soup + 炸糕, the working-man's breakfast · 宝记豆汁店 — the good douzhi · 宫廷香酥牛肉饼 — the beef pastry, best in the city.
Extra买牛肉饼 + 糖火烧 to eat on the 980 bus back. The street is Muslim — no pork, and dress modestly.
🥈 鼓楼 Gulou — the 老北京 breakfast street
WhyOne block of shops doing the same thing for 100 years, all doing it well. This is where Beijing eats breakfast.
Must eat姚记炒肝 Yáojì — "要想吃炒肝，鼓楼一拐弯" (turn the corner at Gulou for chaogan). 炒肝 + 灌肠 + 包子, eaten standing, ¥20–30 · 方砖厂69号 — 炸酱面 in a hutong, ¥20, the noodles are mixed at the table · 门框胡同百年卤煮 — 卤煮火烧, offal + tofu + bread in garlic broth, ¥35, genuinely local · 百年义利 — old-school bakery.
🥉 护国寺小吃 Hùguósì — the snack institution
WhyScatter branches all over the city, cash, no frills, zero tourists. The reference point for Beijing street snacks.
Must eat豌豆黄 (yellow pea cake) · 艾窝窝 (glutinous rice bun) · 豆面糕 · 爆肚 (if you're brave) · and the 豆汁 + 焦圈 — the fermented mung-bean drink. Eat the douzhi at the branch near Gulou, not a mall — the mall one is a diluted tourist version.
🥈 磁器口 / 前门 area — old brands, mostly local
Must eat爆肚冯 — 爆肚, the real blanched tripe with sesame sauce, ¥60 · 小肠陈 — 卤煮, the canonical version · 便宜坊 Biànyìfāng — 焖炉 duck (600-year sealed-oven style) · 全聚德 — 挂炉 duck, the 1864 original · 南门涮肉 — copper-pot lamb near Temple of Heaven, no tourist markup.
Modern Beijing worth a splurge
Where大董 Dà Dǒng — the modern roast duck, crispy skin, plated like fine dining, ¥300+/pp · 四季民福 Sìjì Mínfú — the locals' favourite duck; Nanchang branch looks over the palace moat · 曲廊院 (东四十一条) — creative Chinese in a hidden courtyard · 局气 — fashionable Beijing dishes done well.
NoteDa Dong and Siji Minfu need WeChat waitlists — 3–4h ahead. The others walk in.
Street-level Beijing you can eat standing up

🎭 Shows — what plays in November
Answer to "千古情 / 张艺谋-style spectacular?"
Short answerThere is no 千古情 in Beijing (that brand's flagship is Hangzhou/Sanya/Chengdu). Beijing's equivalent is live performance on a smaller stage — and in November it's genuinely world-class, because the 北京国际戏剧展演季 (Oct–Nov) imports 120 productions from 20 countries.
⚠️ The flamenco timing《飞越弗拉明戈》Flamenco (Sara Baras Ballet, Spain) at 国家大剧院 NCPA ran 19:00 on Nov 6 and Nov 7 — that is the day you land and the day before. You cannot catch it. It was the perfect answer to your question, but the dates fall before you are in the country.
What to do insteadCheck chncpa.org and the official whlyj.beijing.gov.cn weekly calendar in the last week before you fly — NCPA has new shows every week in November (opera, ballet, theatre, concerts, ¥80–300). The 戏剧展演季 season means something good is on almost every night of your trip — you just need to read the calendar, not assume a fixed show.

朝阳剧场《国韵传奇》— 中国杂技团, the national troupe. Genuine high-wire/acrobat art, East 3rd Ring N Rd 36, 16:00–20:00 daily, ¥120–270. This is the one worth your time.
红剧场《绝技秀之蜀国英雄》— Sichuan Suining acrobatic troupe, 14:30/16:10/17:40 daily. Cheaper, more traditional.
湖广会馆《大驾光临》— acrobatics + 评书 in a 300-year-old Qing guild hall near Qianmen. The most atmospheric venue in the city.
🎙️ Crosstalk 相声 — the local evening default
德云社Lao She's crosstalk house. 三里屯剧场 (三里屯SOHO) ¥100–280 · also 天桥剧场, 广德楼戏园, 学院路剧场. 19:30 most nights, 14:00 matinee. No English, no translation needed — the audience laughs where you laugh.
Also老舍茶馆 — Lao She's own teahouse, 京味相声专场 16:30, 《四季北京·茶》19:50, and the actual play 《茶馆》19:30 on Nov 6. Tourist-adjacent but the tea and the 通说 are genuine.
Immersive & large-format
首钢园Shougang Park — the 2026 戏剧展演季 immersive district: script readings, street parades, building light shows on the cooling towers. Free entry, 六工汇 food hall inside, near 鸟巢. Check the calendar for what's on your dates.

Badaling night八达岭夜长城 (the lit-up Badaling with the dance show) ran Apr 30 – Oct 6 for 2026. It is closed in November. Good news: your Simatai night wall (Nov 10) is the better version anyway — smaller, lantern-lit, no tour buses. Don't chase the Badaling night show.
只此青绿The Water Cube 千里江山图 dance-drama hit its 1,000th performance Oct 6–11 at 水立方 and its Nov run is in Guangzhou, not Beijing. Skip it — you've got flamenco instead.

⚠️ The sunset trap — read before you plan 圆明园
圆明园 Old Summer Palace — optional, and only if you do it FIRST
Why it's a trapSunset in Beijing on Nov 9 is 17:04. Twilight is gone by 17:15. Do the Summer Palace first (it takes 4–5 h) and you reach 圆明园's Western Mansions in pitch darkness — the best thing there is unlit stone
Ticket¥10 gate + ¥15 西洋楼遗址 section = ¥25 total. Winter hours 06:00–21:00, but tickets stop ~17:30
If you want itDo 圆明园 FIRST, 08:00–09:30 — in daylight, with almost nobody there. Then Line 4 two stops (圆明园 → 西苑 → 北宫门) to the Summer Palace for 10:00–15:00. That is the only ordering that works
My recommendationDrop it. You have the ginkgo at 08:00 and the Summer Palace at 09:45. 圆明园 is a nice ruin, but the Summer Palace is the reason you came to Beijing — and adding a third park on the day before a 6 km wall hike is how you hurt yourself
Swap insteadIf you want a second park, 香山红叶 (Line 4 北宫门 + bus 563, 15 min) is the better bet than 圆明园 — higher altitude, better colour, and it is on the way
